About Praying Mantis - Long Fist

This style of northern kung fu is a fundamentally sound system that uses circular movements to avoid and attack. Learning applications begin right away, and are taught in sections so that anyone may learn this wonderful style. This system begins by learning hand techniques and also teaches 14 different weapons. Visit the Kung Fu page for more information on our style.

The northern Praying Mantis - Long Fist system was founded by Zhou Yu Shi during the late 1800's near Beijing, China. His philosophy was that by combining Seven-Star Praying Mantis and Long Fist Kung Fu, all ranges of attack (short, medium and long) would be covered. This would instill versatility in the practitioner. Once Zhou Yu Shi mastered his consolidated system, he passed it on to his son, Zhou Lin Qi. Zhou Lin Qi mastered Praying Mantis - Long Fist and opened his own school.

Chow Liu Quang began training under Zhou Lin Qi at an early age, and eventually mastered the system. He brought the Praying Mantis - Long Fist style to America during the 1960's, and soon began teaching it in southern California. Later, he moved to Springfield, Missouri, where he began teaching a five-year old boy named Greg Butler.

Greg stayed with Chow Liu Quang for fourteen years, until the age of nineteen, gaining the rank of Shifu in Praying Mantis - Long Fist Kung Fu and Tai Chi Chuan, Yang style. At age thirty, Shifu Greg returned to Chow Liu Quang to receive rank of Sigung, "Grandfather Teacher".
